I would proactively ask for another deadline with an assurance to make it better. I would try to overcompensate by working more on the next project. I would not say anything about it. An intern points out that they have identified an opportunity to improve a process in your department. I would not take them seriously and would find a way to dismiss their findings. I would genuinely appreciate their efforts, help them implement the change, reward them or write a letter of recommendation for them.
